MOSCOW, 25 January 2010 – Dr Viacheslav Koloskov, a long-standing member of the FIFA Executive Committee, has joined the Russian Bid Committee in their quest to win the right to host the 2018/2022 FIFA World Cup. Assuming tasks in the area of international relations, he will provide advice in sports political matters. He will also represent the bid committee at events and functions during the period leading up to the host country decision which FIFA is expected to announce in early December 2010.
Vitaly Mutko, Russian Sports Minister and bid co-chairman, welcomed the further strengthening of the bid team: “Viacheslav Koloskov provides the bid committee with a wealth of experience in international football due to this many years of work at FIFA and UEFA Executive Committee level and in a number of important committees.”
Koloskov is pleased to take on his new role for Russian football: “While my terms of office in the executive bodies of FIFA and UEFA have come to an end, my life in football has been ongoing. Having witnessed first-hand the incredible power of the game to provide not only entertainment and joy but also to improve society as a whole, helping Russia to win the right to host the FIFA World Cup is another highlight for me.”
The 69-year old Dr Koloskov served on the FIFA Executive Committee from 1979 until 1998 and from 2000 until 2009, either as a member or from 1980 to 1996 as a Vice-President for the former USSR. During his mandates, he chaired various FIFA Committees, such as the Organising Committee for the Olympic Football Tournaments and the Organising Committee for the FIFA Club World Cup. He held similarly high positions at UEFA where he was a member of the Executive Committee from 1994 to 2009 when he was named Honorary Member.
Dr Koloskov played for the amateur Football Club “Krylia Sovetov” as well as for FC “Trud” Noginsk. He presided over the USSR Football Federation from 1979 and the succeeding body, the Football Union of Russia, from 1992 to 2005.
