Krasnodar is located along the Kuban River and has a population of more than 600,000. The city’s name translates into “beautiful gift” or “Catherine’s Gift” simultaneously in recognition of Catherine the Great’s grant of land in the Kuban region to the Black Sea Cossacks and in recognition of Saint Catherine, the Martyr, who is considered to be the patron of the city. Famous Russian soprano Anna Netrebko was born in Krasnodar.
Sights
Krasnodar is the “Gateway to the Caucasus Mountains.” Attractions include among other sights St. Catherine’s Cathedral, the State Arts Museum, a park and the beautiful concert hall of the Krasnodar Philharmonic Society.
Football
FC Kuban of the Premier League makes its home in Krasnodar and is one of the oldest soccer clubs in Russia having been founded in 1928.
