City and population
Rostov-on-Don has a population of over one million people, and is home to the headquarters of several influential environmental organizations. Rostov-on-Don is located approximately 1,000 km southeast of Moscow and is a major transportation hub, with flights to Europe, Africa, and Asia.
The history of Rostov-on-Don dates back to 1749. Then, on the site of the future city, a customs house was built, and a fortress was founded next to it. Thanks to a well-chosen location at the intersection of trade routes, the once small fortress soon grew into a large city, and the Don became one of the key water transport arteries.
